The Ultimate New Year’s Closet Clean Out Guide for Beauty Products and Hair Tools

As the new year dawns, it’s the perfect time to declutter and revamp your beauty arsenal. A thorough closet cleanout can rejuvenate not just your space but also your self-care routine.

From skincare to nail care, hair tools to makeup brushes, here’s your comprehensive guide to tidying up and refreshing your beauty collection.

How to Identify the Expiration Dates on Beauty Products

One key aspect often overlooked during cleanouts is checking expiration dates on beauty products. Look for an icon on the back of the package resembling an open jar with a number followed by an “M” (e.g., “12M” for 12 months). This symbol indicates the product’s lifespan after opening. Once past this period, it’s time to bid farewell to the product to avoid potential skin irritations or reduced effectiveness.

The 6 Beauty Closet Clean Out Zones

1. Skincare

Begin with #skincare products—those trusty moisturizers, serums, and masks. Toss any expired or rarely used items. Remember, sunscreen generally has a shelf life of about one to two years, while active ingredient products might expire sooner. Bacteria loves to grow and loves to outstay its welcome, when in doubt - toss it out!

2. Haircare

Check shampoos, conditioners, and styling products for changes in scent, texture, or color. Typically, hair care products last around one to three years. Dispose of items that have passed their prime. #haircare and #scalpcare is going to be HUGE in beauty this 2024, and rightfully so - we've neglected it for far too long.

3. Makeup

Examine your makeup collection, focusing on #lipsticks, foundations, eyeshadows, and mascaras. Liquid and cream-based products have a shorter lifespan (around six months to two years) compared to powders (up to two years or more). If it smells off, looks different, or has changed consistency, it’s time to let it go.

4. Hair Tools

#Hairtools such as straighteners, #curlingirons and #hairdryers endure wear and tear over time. If they show signs of malfunctioning, frayed cords, or unusual heating patterns, it might be time to replace them for safety reasons. On average, these tools can last anywhere from two to eight years depending on usage and maintenance.

5. Makeup Brushes and Sponges

Clean #makeup & #makeupbrushes regularly to extend their lifespan, but when they start shedding bristles, lose their shape, or develop an odd smell, it’s a sign they need replacing. Sponges should be replaced every few months, depending on usage, as they can harbor bacteria.

6. Nail Care

#Nailpolishes generally last for two years before becoming clumpy or difficult to apply. Check for separation or changes in texture; if noticed, it’s time to bid adieu. If your nail care tools have become dull, rusted, or not functioning as designed - toss them out to avoid infection, nail diseases, or worse... well, lets just toss them out okay!

A new year often symbolizes a fresh start, and what better way to embrace this than by streamlining your beauty collection? By following this ultimate cleanout guide and paying attention to expiration dates, you’ll not only create space but also ensure your products are effective and safe to use. So, dive into your beauty closet, bid farewell to the old, and welcome in the new with open arms—and a fresh makeup palette!
